A BREAKING DISCOVERY SHAKING THE VERY FOUNDATIONS OF MODERN PHYSICS.

NEUTRINOS TRAVELLING FASTER THAN LIGHT CHALLENGE EINSTEIN's THEORY OF RELATIVITY!!!
Subatomic Neutrino Track

Albert Einstein "THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY" is considered as a fundamental pillar in modern physics. But now the scientists say that the result that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light could be proved wrong.

Scientists at CERN (The European Organisation of Nuclear Research), which host the world's largest physics laboratory at Franco-Swiss border claim that they have recorded subatomic particles, known as Neutrinos, travelling faster than the speed of light.

CERN says as part of its OPERA experiment , a neutrino beam fired from a particle accelerator near Geneva to a lab 730km away in Italy travelled 60 nanosecond faster than the speed of light. It is revealed that neutrinos travel at a velocity of 20 parts-per-million above the speed of light.

If the findings are correct, it would force a major rethink of the fundamental laws of nature, including how the universe works. Given the potential far-reaching consequences of such a result, CERN has decided to hold an open house shortly in which scientists can refute or confirm the result based on their measurements.

If the result is confirmed, it might  change our view of physics, but we need to be sure that there are no other, more mundane experiments.

Even the CERN scientists are "flabbergasted" by the claim and are waiting for other to verify the results again before claiming a discovery.

"The feeling that most people have is this can't be right, this can't be real," said James Gillies, a CERN spokesman.

After the experiment the scientists at Fermilab in Chicago have promised to start such a work immediately. He said, "Its a shock. It's going to cause us problems, no doubts about that- if its true."

Given the enormous implications of the find, the scientists will still spent months checking and rechecking their results to make sure there was no flaws in the experiments. The CERN researchers are now looking to the US and JAPAN to confirm the results.

"The results comes as a complete surprise", said Antonio Erediatato, the spokesperson of the OPERA experiment. "After many months of studies and cross checks, we have not found any instrumental effect that could explain the result of the measurement."

CERN said a series of high precision measurements of the distance between the source and the detector, and of the neutrinos' time of flight will be conducted.

IBM and 3M Herald New Era of 3D Electronics......

IBM and 3M have partnered to pioneer a revolutionary new electronics technology that stacks semiconductor microchips into 3D packages. They are 1,000 times more powerful than current devices.
State-of-the-art electronic devices such as touch-screen tablets and smartphones are thin because all of their circuitry is cast onto flat, planar semiconductor microchips that are laid out side by side, then interconnected with overlaid patterns of flat metal wires printed on circuit boards. But by taking those same chips and stacking them on top of each other, they can be interconnected by shorter wires that are faster, use less space and consume less power.
IBM and 3M are developing a new type of adhesive (blue) that can glue together up to 100 microchips into stacks of semiconductors that realize 3D electronics 1,000 times more powerful than today's flat, planar chips. (Source: IBM)
"We believe we can advance the state-of-art in packaging and create a new class of semiconductors that offer more speed and capabilities while [keeping] power usage low—[all] key requirements for many manufacturers, especially for makers of tablets and smartphones," said IBM Vice President of Research Bernard Meyerson.
3D microchips have been on the drawing board for years, but the main problem has been keeping the chips on the inside of the stack cool. Today's flat printed circuit boards allow each planar chip to dissipate heat into the air, but stacked microchips instead heat each other. 3M's job will be making an adhesive that solves this problem by conducting heat away from the interior of chip stacks.
3M's thermally conductive adhesive will use innovative nanoscale structures that pump heat away from the most sensitive interior circuits. Since microchips are fabricated on wafers that hold hundreds of identical copies, 3M's adhesive can be coated on an entire wafer. Each successive wafer will be "glued" with the adhesive to the next one on top of it. Finally, after the 100th wafer is glued to the top, the entire stack of wafers would then be sawed into complete 3D cube-shaped electronic devices.
"We are very excited to be an integral part of the movement to build such revolutionary 3D packaging," said Herve Gindre, division vice president at 3M Electronics Markets Materials Division.
3M lists adhesives as the first of its 46 core technologies, along with connecting devices, converting, extruding, heat shrinking, metallization, precision coating, rubber molding, thermoplastic molding, web handling and 36 more.

MATERIALS THAT CONTROLS THE WAY LIGHT BOUNCES OF IT....

Serdar Kocaman, an electrical engineering PhD candidate and Chee Wei Wong, associate professor of mechanical engineering, in collaboration with the scientists at the University college of London, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Institute of Microelectronics of Singapore have developed an optical nanostructure material that controls the way light bounces off it.

The researchers engineered a structure in which they etched tiny holes, creating a material known as a 'Phototonic Crystal', which behaves as though it has zero index-light can travel with an ultra-fast velocity in such kind of environment. The material, a coating no thicker than one-hundredth of the diameter of the strand of hair, has properties that DON'T OCCUR IN NATURE!

When light travels, it bends-in technical terms, it disperses and incurs 'phase', an oscillating curve that leaves a trail of information behind it. Those oscillations show an object's properties, such as shape and size, which can identify it. However, light hits this specially engineered material without leaving a trace.

"We can now control the flow of light, the fastest thing known to us. This can enable self-focusing light beams, highly directive antennas, and even potentially an approach to hide objects, at least in the small scale or a narrow band of frequencies," said Wong.

The PC features a 57.5cm diagonal HD display that can align itself upto 30 degrees. the view is good even when aligned.

HP stuffed a lot of ports into the 610's 23.0 x 17.7 x 4.1-inch body and clearly had to set some priorities in terms of which ones would be easy to reach. On one side, you'll find a large volume rocker, mute button, 6-in-1 memory card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, and headphone and mic jacks. On the opposite side, there's a Blu-ray drive (also with a large button), and a power button that glows blue.

The 610's also home to two more USB 2.0 ports, dual USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI-in socket, an Ethernet jack, a PCIe slot, and two MiniCard sockets. But these are all tucked in the back of the machine, and are covered by a drop-down latch door. Happily, even if you've got a cable plugged in, you can snap the flap shut, so that it won't hang open awkwardly. As a final flourish, on the back of the chassis, right behind the megapixel webcam, you'll find a wheel that you can use to adjust the angle of the camera.

Its the best PC but the price is kept a bit large around Rs. 74,150/- but it can be worth trying for being a Techno Freak!!!

SOLAR SHEET THAT CAPTURES 90% OF AVAILABLE SUNLIGHT!!!...

A team of researchers led by Patrick Pinhero, associate professor in the chemical engineering department at the University of Missouri, ahs developed a flexible solar sheet that captures more than 90 per cent of available light.
Traditionally, solar powered devices suffer from a two-fold problem.  First, they have difficulty converting the light they capture to electricity.  Second, they only capture a small band of wavelengths out of the wide range of wavelengths found in sunlight striking the Earth.  Improving in either area can offer gains to the net power output (and efficiency) of a solar cell.
Researchers at the University of Missouri are claiming a breakthrough in the second category.  They claim [press release] to have developed a device that can capture 90 percent of sunlight, versus the 20 percent that current photovoltaic (PV) panels capture.

The device use NANTENNA which is a thin, mouldable sheet of small antennae that can harvest the heat from industrial processes and turn it into usable electricity. Since it can absorb infrared radiation, the material has the capacity to capture more than 90% of the available sunlight compared to the traditional photovoltaic cells which absorb only 20% of the wavelength. The researchers aim to extend this concept to a direct solar-facing nantenna device capable of collecting solar irradiation in the near infrared and optical regions of the solar spectrum.
Professor Pinhero is working to port the resulting device to a mass-producable design.  He's currently securing U.S. Department of Energy funding and money from private investors to accomplish this.  To that end, he's enlisted the help of Dennis Slafer of MicroContinuum, Inc., of Cambridge, Mass., a solar power and alternative energy firm.

"Our overall goal is to collect and utilize as much solar energy as is theoretically possible and bring it to the commercial market in an inexpensive package that is accessible to everyone," Professor Pinhero states.  "If successful, this product will put us orders of magnitudes ahead of the current solar energy technologies we have available to us today."

Frankfurt 2011|| Mercedes F-125 Unveiled.....

A PLUG-IN HYDROGEN FUTURE!

Mercedes after having a 125 year business in the world showed the world that they still rule the motor industry after revealing their new concept car at 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show by unveiling the Hydrogen fueled Mercedes Benz F-125!!!
It's a hybrid. But instead of the usual petro/electro mix, thrust comes from a high-voltage lightweight lithium-sulphur battery and F-Cell hydrogen-powered motor.
The car has a large, luxurious 4 seater with zero emissions. The body consists of several metals and composites, passenger controls via "touch, speech and hand gestures," semi-autonomous driving, three-dimensional and projector-beam displays and a range of 1,000 kilometers.
But here rise a question. Is Hydrogen fueling is our future? Not for a while.  Head of Mercedes-Benz cars, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, explained how hydrogen's a big part of the firm's future, claiming that MB's currently working with legislators to build an infrastructure able to support vehicles of its ilk.

Zetsche says: "Hydrogen contains more energy per weight as any other fuel. The technology's there, but we need the service stations. It's the chicken-egg problem and to support hydrogen there must be a paradigm change... But if we offer these new, alternative technologies, I don't see why hydrogen couldn't be the answer for us."

Robot that walks on water!!..Ever heard of it? Well, here's the description

Scientists in China have created a microbot that imitated the water-walking capabilities of the 'water-strider'- a long-legged insect that effortlessly skims across pond and lakes surfaces. The aquatic robot weighs as much as 390 water striders but does not sink when placed on water. In fact, it stands, walk and runs effortlessly on its surface.
Scientists claim that the bionic bot is a vast improvement over previous devices of its kind, positioning it as a prime candidate for military spy missions, water pollution monitoring and other applications. It has ten water-repellent, wire legs and also two movable, oar-like legs propelled by miniature motors.
According to Qinmin Pan, associate of chemical engineering, Zhejiang University, who has achieved this rare feat, these robots are not only practical and agile but also inexpensive.
